Dancing Tumbe

11/24/2012

Tumbe is the typical dance of Afro-Chileans. It seems easy to dance Tumbe, but implies moving all your body, which can be very tiring. I have been learning it since five months ago. Here I’ll give you a simple recipe of how to dance Tumbe.

HOW TO DANCE TUMBE

Ingredients:

Olives

Cotton

Machete

Turns and a big skirt

A pinch of sensuality and flirt

Preparation:

To dance Tumbe you need to bend your legs a little bit and get into the “Afro position,” move your hips and also move your shoulders and arms. With your arms you basically simulate the harvest of olives, cotton, but also to cut sugar cane clenching your fist as if you had took up a machete. With your hips you try to simulate the form of an eight or the symbol of infinite, and you can hit someone else’s hips if you want. Move your skirt when you turn and don’t forget to smile.

Although the first day I danced Tumbe everything was ok, the problem came the day after. I hardly could move my body, and it was a painful challenge to go up the stairs or even go walking. Just in that moment, I thought “never more!.” Either way, I went again to rehearsals because I knew the pain would be less each week. Well, I suffered for almost a month, but now I am a good dancer, according to my professor’s opinion, and it doesn’t hurt anymore.
